For 12 years running, the responses to Impagination's Great Greeting™ Survey present a clear message – if you want to
engage and retain clients, a physical form of appreciation
wins hands down over electronic greetings.
|
• 93% of respondents indicated that their favorite greeting was a physical piece that arrived by mail, up 1% from last year.
• 28% of survey respondents choose to send their seasonal greetings by both mail and email, down 4% again from last year. 44% sent by mail, 9% by email only and 19% did not send one at all.
• 30% of respondents prefer to receive a seasonal greeting that combines a physical piece and email. This is the same as last year, with 67% preferring mailed greetings, which is up 3% from last year.
While physical greetings can be more expensive to produce and distribute than email, clients' clear preference for them is valid justification for including them in your client appreciation budget
and planning.
For further justification, consider the high level of retention and "pass-along" that favorite greetings receive –74% showed their favorite greeting to others, and 80% kept their favorite, which is
up 5% over last year.
A high level of retention and pass-along clearly demonstrates that tangible communication pays dividends with your clients – dividends that extend to all elements of your marketing.
28% of respondents sent both emailed and electronic greetings.
And 30% of respondents still prefer to receive a combined physical and electronic piece. Participants commented on the added tangibility, quality and personalization of electronic greetings this year. View this terrific example.
The comments from participants reinforce the personal aspect of mailed greetings and the impact of a tangible show of appreciation, in contrast with the limited "mind-share" engagement of emailed greetings. If you are not sending an outstanding "keeper" greeting by mail, you can increase engagement by sending a combined physical and electronic greeting.
