"Thank You" is a Marketing Opportunity

Last week I received two surprises in the mail. One was an unremarkable, hand addressed business envelope, with a rubberstamped return address and an upside down postage stamp. It was forgettable except it was bulkier than a letter. Curious, I opened it to find a Tim Horton's gift card with a hand written sticky-note thanking me for making a referral. Well that was nice, but I almost ignored it! So how do you thank your customers for referrals? This is a frequently overlooked marketing opportunity and as marketers, Impagination always stresses that each touch point with your clients and customers needs to reinforce your unique business persona. Would you send an unremarkable package to thank your customer?

The second surprise arrived in an intriguing square white shipping box. Inside was a red and white gift box tied with a coordinated red and white grosgrain ribbon. Loving red as I do, it immediately grabbed my attention! Anticipation built while I untied the ribbon and opened the box. Inside was a white mug encircled by the word "Thank you." There was a photo of the trade show warriors taken at the show with two personalized handwritten notes on the back thanking me for visiting their booth. Wow, I was impressed! This is precisely how they wanted me to feel and my level of engagement and confidence in this new supplier was elevated by this well-executed, direct-mail follow-up.

While both companies want me to think about them as I enjoy my daily tea, the gift card is disposable while the mug will be kept at home or the office. Likely the "Timmies" gift card was purchased and mailed to me using whatever office supplies were on hand. The mug mailer was well thought out, all the elements purchased and prepared in advance for a bulk mailing to the many people they connected with at the show. Both personalized notes were a critical element, but the photo was a savvy step-up from the sticky-note.
