I call December the silly-season. 🙄
It’s often a short month featuring canapés, charcuterie boards, sweet treats and multiple business, personal or family commitments and obligations. So, I’m keeping this short.
This is also a time when we may be connecting with, socializing or acknowledging our colleagues, team, suppliers, clients, even family. And there can be challenges in communication.
Here are some easy yet powerful word substitutions to build positive communications over the hectic holiday season.
✨Busy vs Productive When asked how 2024 has been, respond with “It’s been productive” (rather than busy). Notice “productive” has a positive tone compared with the rush and hurry of "busy" .
✨Have to vs Get to Changing “have to” to “get to” frees you up from obligation and inspires action. Instead of saying “I have to bring in more sales before the end of the year” say, “I get to bring in more sales before the end of the year.”
✨But vs And Replacing "but" with "and" is a simple yet powerful way to enhance communication, making it feel more inclusive, collaborative, and positive. I challenge you to replace the word “but” with “and”. E.g. “I’m busy upgrading my communications, but what word do I have to use?”, vs “I’m productively upgrading my communications, and what word do I get to use?”
A subtle shift in language helps change the focus from difficulty to potential, encouraging a more positive and proactive mindset.🧠
Pick just one of these ideas to practice. Notice a change in your attitude, and those around you will notice and join in too.
P.S. Here’s a fun fact to share at your next gathering. Did you know we only need 2500-3000 words to understand 90% of everyday English conversation?
Happy holidays! You’ve got this.🎁
